Stretches for Typing

Many people type on their computers and phones as part of their daily routine. Whether you are an avid communicator with friends and family, spend your days playing electronic games, or have a career that requires you to type, the days and years on repetitive motion can add up.

Over time, the repetitive typing movements can cause strain and pain in our hands if we do not take time to work on our hand strength and flexibility. Conditions such as arthritis can further lower our typing abilities, and it is important that we take action to improve any symptoms early and alleviate future symptoms from developing.

One of the best ways you can reduce the strain from typing at home is to perform daily hand stretches. While maximal benefit will come from working with a certified hand therapist who can guide you on exercises specifically suited for you, these at-home stretches are recommended by our certified hand therapists at Twin Boro Physical Therapy to help your hands feel and move their best.

Palm Clasps

Press your palms together and interlock your fingers. Your fingers should press against the back side of the opposite hand. Once you are in this position, squeeze your hands together, exerting pressure through the palms and squeezing the fingers against your hands. Hold this for 5-10 seconds and then relax for 5-10 seconds. Repeat 5 times or as many times as able.

This stretch is beneficial because it helps to stretch the muscles through the hand by applying pressure to the fingers. This is a great way to quickly release tension and keep the fingers nimble.

‘O’ Exercise

Another simple exercise that can be done anywhere is what we called the ‘O’ exercise. For this exercise, you touch your thumb to each of the other four fingertips of the same hand. When you touch the thumb with each fingertip, and ‘O’ shape will form.

Thumb and Finger Spread

The finger spread exercise is beneficial for improving the overall hand strength of the hand. For this, you will need a rubber band, elastic hair band, hand putty, or similar elastic item. Put the elastic around all fingers together and then spread the fingers and thumb apart against the tension of the band. Move all fingers at the same time. Repeat 5-10 times for 3-5 sets or as many as able.

The same exercise can be practiced by holding your hand forward and the palm toward you (fingers directed downwards). Again, take the fingers of the hand being exercised and apply pressure.
