While we strive for our patients to achieve full recovery and not require environmental modifications, sometimes certain symptoms are unable to be resolved completely. When this is the case, there are often easy swaps or adjustments in your daily life that can significantly reduce discomfort. Our certified hand therapists have years of experience with patients just like you and can work with you to develop a plan to help you live your best life.

Joint distraction

Our joints are able to provide movement in no small part due to the space within them. When we lose this “space” within our joints, we begin to have problems, such as pain and stiffness. Our ligaments, tendons, cartilage, synovial membranes, bursae, and even bones may begin to become affected. This can lead to structural compromises or even long term deterioration of the joint.

What is a Joint Distraction Exercise? Joint Distraction exercises use resistance created by an external object—such as our other hand or a resistance ball—to create a vector force that separates the joint surface from one another. This separation allows the joint structure to be relieved of pressure and begin the natural healing process.

Joint distraction: fingers and thumbs

  1. To perform this exercise, relax your hand in front of your body with the palm facing the chest.
  2. With the other hand, grip the top of the index finger and pull the finger outwards until you feel gentle separation at the knuckle joints. There should not be pain.
  3. Repeat with the middle finger, ring finger, and pinky finger.
  4. For each stretch, hold 5-10 seconds and repeat as needed.
  5. Complete on both hands.

Joint distraction: wrists

  1. To perform this exercise, relax your hand in front of your body with the palm facing the chest.
  2. With the other hand, grip just above the wrist joint and pull outwards gently. You should feel and see some slight separation of the wrist joint.
  3. Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat as needed.
  4. Complete on both wrists.
