Wrist and Hand Mobilization

Wrist and hand mobilization is an important part of certified hand therapy that is focused on restoring normal joint range of motion and function. However, it is important that mobilization exercises are performed by a certified hand therapist in order to avoid potential injuries. Certified hand therapists can ensure you meet the necessary conditions to safely benefit from wrist and hand mobilization without unintentionally worsening your injury.

When deciding whether wrist and hand mobilization is right for you, your certified hand therapist will consider:

  • Whether your joint is stable. If you are healing from a joint fracture or have a joint fracture in a nearby area of your body, mobilization exercises may worsen the symptoms.
  • The activities of your daily life. This includes a patient’s occupation and leisure activities.
  • The range of palmar abduction in opposition to your CMC joint. In order for certain mobilization techniques, the thumb must be able to touch each of the fingertips comfortably.
  • The range of wrist flexion and extension.
  • The positioning of the radioulnar joint. In order for proper mobilization, the joint must be in mid position.
  • The distal palmar arch.
  • The thumb range of motion.
  • The natural movements of the hand and wrist in relation to grasp, pinch grip, finger flexion, and extension.
  • Pain levels and external medical conditions.
  • Injury history.
