Joints of the Fingers

The index, ring, middle, and pinky fingers all have the same joint function and provide a large range of functions for our hand movements. Typing, grasping, playing instruments, and many daily tasks all rely on the use of the fingers for certain movements. The fingers (excluding the thumb) are composed of four joints which all provide certain movements. Let’s dive in.

Distal Interphalangeal Joint (DIP Joint)

The uppermost joint of the fingers is known as the DIP joint and can be located by looking for the first joint underneath the fingernail. This joint is responsible for allowing us to create a tight grip. Common conditions of the joint requiring hand therapy include fractures, mucous cysts, Jersey Finger, arthritis, and Mallet Finger.

Proximal Interphalangeal Joint (PIP Joint)

The PIP joint is located between the first two bones of the finger and allows us to extend and bend the finger. This joint is one of the most common to experience stiffness and is commonly sprained or fractured. Other conditions requiring hand therapy include sprains, fractures, dislocations, arthritis, and extensor tendon ruptures.

Metacarpophalangeal Joint (MCP Joint)
The MP joint is where the finger meets the hand bone. The MP joint gives us the ability to have a power grip as well as fine pinching movements. This joint is responsible for all movements of the finger relative to the hand. This joint allows for bending and flexing of the fingers, spreading the fingers, and bringing all fingers together.

Carpometacarpal Joint (CMC Joint)

The lowermost joint in the CMC joint, which connects the finger bone with the wrist. This joint is responsible for allowing the hand to change shape and grasp different types of objects. This area is commonly injured after a strong impact, leading to fractures or dislocations.
