Easy At-Home Hand Therapy Routine

Interested in expanding your certified hand therapy to include at-home stretches? You’re in the right place. We’ve compiled a few of our easy at-home stretches and exercises to help alleviate cramping during the day and reduce the likelihood of overuse injuries.

Generally, we recommend you start with a few finger stretches first to warm up the hand and relax the muscles. Whether you type for your job or just to communicate with loved ones, having your fingers continually moving in the same positions can lead to uncomfortable sensations. Here are our favorite three simple finger stretches:

  1. Finger spreads. To do this exercise, simply spread your fingers as far apart as they can go and hold the stretched position for 15 seconds then relax.
  2. Table spreads. This exercise is similar, except you place your hands on a hard surface. For this exercise, spread your fingers once more put keep your palm placed on the table. Hold this for 3 seconds then relax. Repeat 20 repetitions.
  3. Fist opens. For this exercise, open and close your hands into a fist slowly. Keep the palm up while performing these exercises. Repeat 20 times.

After completing your finger stretches, we recommend a few wrist and hand exercises. Here are two of our favorites:

    1. Reverse prayer position stretch. For this exercise, press the backs of your palms and fingers together with your fingers pointing towards the floor. Point your elbows outwards and increase the intensity of the stretch by lowering the elbows. Hold for 30 seconds.
    2. Pressure Exercise Hand. For this exercise, hold your arm outwards with your palm facing up. With your other hand, bend the fingers of your hand downwards so you feel a stretch through your hand and wrist. Hold for 3-5 seconds and repeat 5-10 times.

Finally, we recommend a few active exercises to increase flexibility and strength. Here are two of our favorites:

  1. Finger Dancing. This exercise is a bit silly, but it is effective! Start by dancing your fingers around to your favorite music, incorporating bending and straightening. Try to move them in different ways—maybe even come up with a routine!
  2. Small Object Pickup. Improving fine motor skills is important but can feel like a tedious task. Try to make it fun by mixing it with active activities, such as completing a puzzle with small pieces or organizing your coins. Just the act of moving your fingers in this way will improve your fine motor skills.
