What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger is the result of inflammation in the tendons that are responsible for flexing your fingers. When these fingers become inflamed, you will feel symptoms of pain, limited movement, and difficulty straightening or bending the finger.

In addition to pain and movement restrictions, you may also feel symptoms such as:

  • Stiffness
  • Heat
  • Persistent pain at the base of the thumb or finger
  • A bump at the base of the finger
  • A snapping or popping sensation
  • Inability to straighten finger after bending

The symptoms can act independently or together and be on one or more fingers simultaneously. Symptoms are typically at their worst in the morning or when straightening your fingers. Picking up objects may aggravate symptoms.

To help ease symptoms of trigger finger, here are two at-home stretches you can do to reduce pain and improve movement. However, a trained physical therapist can develop a comprehensive care plan to help prevent symptom worsening and future symptoms from developing.

Finger Extensor Stretch

  1. Lie the hand flat on a solid surface
  2. With the other hand, hold the finger causing pain
  3. Lift the finger slowly while keeping the rest of the hand flat
  4. Stretch the finger as far as it can go without feeling strain or sharp pain
  5. Hold for 10-15 seconds
  6. Repeat 5x
  7. Repeat each finger 3x per day

Finger Abduction Stretch

  1. Place your hand in front of you, extending your affected finger next to a nonaffected finger
  2. Use your thumb and index finger from the opposite hand to squeeze together the two extended fingers
  3. Keeping the pressure with your thumb and index finger, try to separate the two fingers.
  4. Hold for 10-15 seconds
  5. Repeat 5x at least 3x per day
