All About Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

If you’ve ever had pain in your jaw (either on one or both sides), this could be caused by a condition called temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD or TMJ. This typically involves symptoms such as jaw pain, jaw muscle spasms, or a clicking feeling in the jaw. Symptoms may become severe enough to make eating and talking difficult or impossible.

TMD typically develops over time and is not caused by a specific injury. The first reported symptom is often pain after eating hard foods or opening the mouth widely. The temporomandibular joint is the connection of the mandible and mandibular fossa of the temporal bone in the skull. To allow sliding of this joint to open the mouth, there is a small disc between the two bones. The temporomandibular joint is also supported by a combination of muscles of ligaments to help stabilize the joint and allow movement.

How does TMD Develop?

Many factors can influence the development of TMD. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Forward head posture
  • Clenching of the jaw
  • Muscle spasms
  • Movement or displacement of the articular disc in the joint
  • Stress

Overuse of the joint and stress in the joint can lead to inflammation and a reduction in function. When the soft tissues of the joint become damaged, the damage and inflammation can quickly increase in severity due to the need for everyday use of the jaw for eating, talking, and daily function.

How is TMD diagnosed?

TMD is typically diagnosed after jaw pain becomes apparent. Once this concern is brought to the attention of a dentist or trained practitioner, your healthcare provider will assess the range of motion of the jaw and look for abnormalities between the two sides and overall. They will also manually feel the jaw joint and muscles to look for inflammation, tenderness, or clicking sound.

If arthritis is suspected, an X-ray or MRI may be taken to look for any deviations from normal.

After diagnosis, you will be connected with a physical therapist, such as those at Twin Boro Physical Therapy, to begin a treatment plan to alleviate pain and improve movement abilities.
