Types of Physical Therapy Treatments

There are many types of physical therapy treatments, and different ones are more suited to different patients and injury types. Examples of these treatment types include:

Therapeutic Exercise. Therapeutic exercise is used to help build strength and flexibility in the area of concern and overall in the body. Depending on your concerns and condition, therapeutic exercises will be targeted to help build the movement abilities you need. For example, a pitcher struggling with a shoulder injury will have targeted exercises in this area, while a senior working to build balance will have exercises focused on their needs.

Ultrasound. Ultrasound therapy is a form of treatment where ultrasound waves are sent through the head of the machine deep into the muscle tissues. This heats the tissues and stimulates cavitation in the muscles, which improves circulation and speeds healing.

Ice and Heat Therapy. Ice and heat can be used together or independently to help reduce inflammation and reduce pain. Ice is often used on newer injuries to calm inflammation, while heat is more commonly used on older injuries to sooth the area and reduce tension.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy. For this method of physical therapy, a probe will be attached to the injury site. This probe will be able to transmit a high-energy acoustic wave to the area of concern. The purpose of these acoustic waves is to put pressure on the muscles and tendons in order to increase blood flow to the area and improve circulation to increase healing. This is often considered an experimental procedure and is not always covered by insurance.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). For this type of treatment, blood is drawn by a healthcare practitioner and separated into different components. Your blood contains growth factors in it which are proteins that help to heal the body. Your healthcare provider is able to make a serum of the plasma from your blood and inject it into the injury site. This has been shown on professional athletes to speed healing, but it is still considered to be a newer treatment type.
