What is Telehealth Physical Therapy?

Sometimes, going to a physical therapy clinic in-person is just not a feasible reality. Busy schedules, children or family obligations, transportation difficulties, and time constraints are just a few of the many reasons people have difficulty seeking care. However, at Twin Boro Physical Therapy, our mission is to offer care to every person that believes it may benefit them. To continue working towards this goal, we now offer telehealth to our patients.

While the benefits of in-person physical therapy are apparent, virtual physical therapy can also provide high quality care. Patients often have many questions surrounding this type of treatment, with some of the most common questions being:

How are sessions conducted?

Sessions are conducted via video call, and we ask that you position your camera in a way that allows your movements to be clearly visible to your physical therapist. Your physical therapist will instruct your movements and therapeutic exercises. They will watch your form over the video camera and give you adjustments, as well as at-home exercises to continue in between your sessions.

Do you need equipment?

Some equipment may be beneficial, but we will work with you based on what is available. Light weights, resistance bands, and ice or heat packs are generally all you will need. If these are unattainable for you, we will work to provide you with the resources most beneficial. For exercises requiring additional equipment, household materials can often be used. For example, stairs are a great way to practice “step-ups” that would traditionally be done with a block in the physical therapy office.

Is a hybrid approach possible?

We work with patients on an individual basis to craft a care plan specifically suited for their needs.

How is the initial consultation performed?

If you can come into the office for the initial consultation, that is great. However, the assessment can also be performed over a video call. In this case, your therapist will ask a series of questions about your condition and related concerns. You also may be asked to show the injury site to assess for discoloration and swelling.
