At-Home Exercises to Reduce Knee Pain

Sometimes, all you need are a few at-home exercises to alleviate tension in the knees and improve ease of movement. Here are a few exercises to help gently strengthen lower leg muscles, improve stability, and improve the range of motion of your knees. Here are a few of our favorite at-home exercises:

Step-Ups and Step-Downs

  1. Start by standing in front of a stair-height (or lower) object, such as a step stool or in front of a staircase in your home. This can also be done with a thick book or other low objects.
  2. Step onto the object with the affected leg. If needed, be near a wall, banister, or other object for stability.
  3. Step up by pushing through the ball of the foot on the affected leg. Lift the other foot onto the step.
  4. Now, with both feet on the low surface, step down with good leg, keeping pressure and balance rooted in the affected leg.
  5. Step down the rest of the way, moving the affected leg to join the good leg with both feet on the ground.
  6. Repeat 5 to 15 times.

Knee Extensions

  1. Make a loop with an exercise band and attach one end of the loop to an external object such as a couch leg or other sturdy post.
  2. Loop the other end of the end around the knee of the injured leg.
  3. Step back with the good leg.
  4. Keep both feet planted firmly on the ground. There should be a gentle bend in the injured leg.
  5. Slowly press the back of the knee of the injured leg into the resistance band and straighten against the tension.
  6. Hold the straight leg position for 5-10 seconds then return to the slight bend.
  7. Repeat 5 to 15 times.
