Physical Therapy for Knee Egg Harbor Township, NJAt Twin Boro Physical Therapy, we pair patients one-on-one with a physical therapist to individualize all treatment plans. When a treatment plan is developed for you, it will take into account your current condition, physical abilities, body history, anatomy, lifestyle, and personal preferences. How Are Knee Injuries Treated?

When knee injuries first happen, the usual course of action is a line of nonsurgical treatments. These generally consist of at-home measures to see if the symptoms are able to go away on their own. If you believe you may have injured your knee, follow these steps:

  • Rest the area. After a knee injury, it is important to avoid putting weight on the knee or bending and straightening it excessively.
  • Ice the knee. In 20 minute intervals, place an ice pack on the injured area and repeat with segments of 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off throughout the day. Be careful not to put the ice directly on the skin and keep a thin layer (such as a dish towel) between the ice and the knee.
  • Compress the knee. To help decrease swelling, gently wrap the knee with a soft bandage, such as ace wrap.
  • Elevate the knee. If possible, elevate the leg to help reduce swelling in the area. For best results, elevate the leg higher than the heart.

After a knee injury, you may be wondering whether to seek medical treatment. As a general rule of thumb, if any of the following signs are present, you should seek medical help. However, it is better safe than sorry—if you have any doubt, consult a medical professional to avoid further damage to the area.

Signs you should seek medical treatment:

  • Severe pain
  • Unable to move the knee
  • Trouble putting weight on the leg
  • Limping
  • Swelling at the site
  • Popping noises
  • A feeling of instability

When seeking medical treatment, nonsurgical measures such as knee immobilization, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS such as ibuprofen) are the first line of treatment.

In some cases, such as fractures and severe damage to soft tissues, surgery is necessary to restore full function. This is especially common for ACL tears. When surgery is needed, it can either be performed through open surgery or arthroscopic surgery, depending on the advice of the surgeon.
