Common Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are some of the most common injuries that require physical therapy, and they affect people of all ages and lifestyles. The most common knee injuries we see are sprains and soft tissue tears (such as meniscal tears), as well as bone fractures and patellar dislocations. Because of the intertwined nature of the structures in the knee, it is common for more than one structure in the knee to require physical therapy at once.

Pain, swelling, instability, and difficulty putting weight on the knee are some of the most often seen signs of injury in the knee. Knee injuries we see include, but are not limited to:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries. These injuries usually result from sports activities and often require surgery. Common causes include sharp cutting and pivoting, such as when players rapidly change directions in soccer or ultimate frisbee. This injury frequently is accompanied by additional injuries to the site.
  • Poster Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injuries. This injury typically comes from an impact to the front of the knee while the knee is bent, such as in sports or an automobile accident.
  • Collateral Ligament Injuries. This injury comes from an impact to the knee in a sideways direction.
  • Fractures. Fractures most often come from an impact to the knee, such as in an automobile accident or fall.
  • Tendon tears. We see the majority of these tears in adults who play running or jumping sports. Falls and impacts can cause this injury.
  • Meniscal tears. This injury often happens during sports when the player is twisting or cutting, but can also be due to arthritis and aging.
