Dislocated Kneecap: What You Need to Know

A dislocated kneecap, also known as a dislocated patella, occurs when the kneecap slips out of its natural alignment. When this happens, you will likely feel sharp pain and a feeling that the kneecap is out of place. When this happens, the kneecap usually slips back into place, but swelling and pain will occur. If the kneecap does not slip back into place, it is important to seek urgent medical attention to prevent further damage.

Nonsurgical Treatment Methods

If the kneecap is out of place, immediate medical care is needed. This often occurs at an urgent care or emergency room. At the medical center, the most common mode of treatment involves pain management and moving the kneecap back into place. The doctor will treat the pain of the kneecap with NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) or more intensive pain medications depending on the symptoms. They will then gently apply pressure to the area to move the kneecap back into place. This is called reduction.

After a kneecap injury, you will be prescribed the RICE method. This involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Most kneecap injuries do not require surgery and do not cause long-term damage. However, one dislocation increases the chance of follow-up dislocations, so it is important to seek physical therapy to strengthen the area.

Surgical Treatment Methods

If there is extensive damage to the ligaments surrounding the kneecap, surgery may be needed for a complete recovery. Sometimes, a piece of bone or cartilage may also be floating around the knee and causing pain. These dislodged pieces are identified through x-rays and MRI scans and can be removed through open surgery or arthroscopic surgery.

Who is At-Risk for Kneecap Dislocation?

Teenage and young adult athletes have the highest rates of kneecap dislocations. Teen athletes have the highest risk, with females having the highest likelihood. Tall, overweight males also have a high risk of this type of injury.

The most common cause of kneecap dislocation is sports and athletics that require twisting movements. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Gymnastics
  • Cheerleading
  • Dance
  • Baseball
  • Ice hockey
  • Soccer
  • Weightlifting

Falls and traumatic impacts to the knee can also cause dislocation of the kneecap. Regardless of the origin of the injury, physical therapy is a vital part of the care plan to ensure that the strength and stability needed for optimal knee performance is regained and young (or old) athletes are able to compete at the desired level.
