Common Knee Injuries in Young Athletes

For young athletes, knee injuries most often originate from sports or a sudden impact, such as a collision. We see a wide variety of knee injuries in our athletes, with the most common for the younger population being as follows:

Runner’s Knee

Runner’s knee, also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome, is a common cause of pain in the knee. This pain originates in the front of the knee and is typical in young athletes who run frequently and on hard surfaces. This is often an overuse injury.

Knee Tendinitis

Knee tendinitis comes from inflammation and swelling in the tendons of the knee. When this affects the patellar tendon, which runs from the kneecap to the shin bone, it is called patellar tendinitis.

Fractures

Knee fractures are uncommon in young athletes outside of automobile accidents or large falls. The highest risk is to the growth plate in the knee. When this injury is suspected, it is important to not put weight on the leg until it is evaluated by a medical doctor.

Ligament and Cartilage Injuries

Torn ligaments and injuries to the cartilage tend to happen as a result of an impact from a collision. Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) are the most common. These injuries sometimes require surgery, but both typically require physical therapy.
