Functional Movement Exercises for Knee Arthritis

Knee arthritis can make everyday movements difficult, but by practicing functional movements you can greatly reduce symptoms and slow the progression of arthritis. Here are a few of our favorite at-home functional movement exercises:

Stair Step-Ups

To practice this, stand in front of the bottom stair or an object of similar height. Hold onto the banister or wall if necessary. Place one foot firmly on the stair and push through the foot to lift the second leg to meet beside it. Step down with the second foot you lifted and then bring the first foot down beside it. Repeat this a few times on each side as able. As you progress, you can use a higher step or climb multiple steps at once.

Sit/Stands

To practice sit/stands, start by sitting on a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground. Without using your hands, lean forwards and press through the soles of your feet to stand up slowly and controlled. Following this, sit back down slowly without “falling” back into the chair. Rest for one minute and repeat again. To raise the seat of the chair, place cushions beneath you.

Leg Cross

To practice this movement, sit on the edge of a firm surface such as a chair or counter and lift the legs off the ground while keeping them straight. Cross one ankle over the other with the legs straight and squeeze the thighs together. Hold for as long as you can and then relax for 1 minute. Repeat 2 more times then switch legs and repeat.
