Exercises for Knee Stability

When a poll was given to the American public, it was found that over 25 percent of all Americans deal with chronic knee or leg pain. Causes varied, including injuries, muscular imbalances, overuse injuries, sedentary lifestyles, and limited mobility.

At-home exercises are a great way to increase the stability of the knee that is needed to complete more difficult strengthening and stretching movements. By improving the overall stability of the knee, you are able to prevent future injuries to the area. It is important that you never “push through pain” when performing exercises and consult a doctor if you notice consistent pain or inflammatory responses such as swelling.

Straight Leg Lifts

To perform this movement, sit up straight in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent. Engage the thigh muscles of the injured leg to straighten the knee and hold the leg extended, squeezing the knee and surrounding thigh muscles. Hold this position for 5 seconds then gently lower the knee. Repeat 3 rounds of 10 lifts.

As you get stronger, adding a resistance band or ankle weights can help to increase difficulty.

Side Leg Lifts

While standing, flex the foot of your injured leg and shift the weight to your non-injured leg. Squeezing the knee straight and engaging the thigh muscles, lift your injured leg to the side and hold for 5 seconds. Lower the leg back to your midline and repeat 3 rounds of 5-10 times.

As you get stronger, adding a resistance band or ankle weights can help to increase difficulty.

Short-Arc Extensions

Lie on the floor with a rolled towel under your knees. Engage the muscles to press the legs straight (as straight as possible) with the back of the knee pressing into the towel. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 3 rounds of 5 reps.
