Feeling Sore After A Workout—Is This Normal?

After a difficult workout, it is not uncommon to experience aches and pains in your muscles. When you work your muscles intensely, you create microscopic tears in the muscles that the body then works to repair. At this stage, your muscles may feel a bit swollen due to the inflammation in the tissue, and it is not uncommon to feel bloated. When your muscles are repairing after being sore, the fibers are essentially being rebuilt to be tougher and stronger. This is your body’s way of preparing your muscles to be able to withstand the stress you put on them without being as sore the next time you perform the same activity. Over time, your muscles will continue to get stronger, and soon enough, you will be leveling up even more!

While many people equate this bloated feeling to their workout “not working,” it is actually just the opposite. Your body has to adjust to your new training regimen and routine, and it will take time for your muscles and body to get used to the new activity or new intensity. During this period, it is important to drink lots of water, eat healthily, give yourself lots of rest, and stay consistent!

When Is It Normal To Feel Sore?

Depending on your current fitness levels and routine, what will lead your muscles to become sore will vary greatly. However, the following changes often lead to muscle soreness:

  • Trying to new activity that requires activation and use of muscles you don’t normally use
  • Increasing the intensity of a current activity. For example, lifting heavier weights.
  • Increasing the repetition of a current activity. For example, biking 3 times per week instead of 1.
  • Exercising while you are sick, sleep deprived, or otherwise fatigued.

When Is Soreness A Problem?

Soreness is a problem when the pain begins during or immediately after an exercise (soreness should generally begin 8-24 hours later), when it is accompanied by severe pain or loss of motion, dark urine, or extreme swelling. In any of these cases, you may have damaged a muscle or other tissue within your body and should seek medical attention.
