Common Knee Complaints

The knee is the largest joint in the body. It is built for weight bearing, stability, and mobility. It is composed of four bones and three bone-to-bone joints. There are also muscle groups that surround the knee, as well as a variety of ligaments, soft tissues called the medial and lateral meniscus, and bursae.

A knee injury can cause decreased muscle control, loss of motion, and impaired strength and endurance. Pain can result from overuse, traumatic strain /sprain, or inflammatory conditions such as knee osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Below are some of the most common knee injuries we treat.

Patellar Fracture – The patella, or kneecap, is the bone in the knee that is most often fractured, typically by tripping and falling forward onto the kneecap. Adults between 20 and 50 and those who suffer from osteoporosis are most vulnerable to patella fractures.

Patellar Dislocation – Another common knee condition, especially in young athletes, is a patellar (kneecap) dislocation. This occurs when the bones of the knee slip partially or completely out of place. Dislocations are most commonly caused by falls, vehicle crashes and sports-related trauma, and often occur when the foot is planted and a rapid change of direction takes place.

ACL Injury – One of the most commonly injured ligaments in the knee is the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). It is often torn during sports like soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and other sports, when the foot is planted and the knee twists sharply in a different direction or is extended beyond its normal range of motion. There is usually immediate, intense pain and a feeling that the knee is unstable.

Meniscus Injury – There are two structures attached to the joint surface of the tibia called the medial meniscus and the lateral meniscus. They function to cushion the knee joint during weight bearing activities. Most people recover full function after a course of physical therapy to strengthen and stabilize the knee.

Knee Replacement SurgeryKnees wear out for many reasons, such as inflammation from arthritis, injury, and ordinary wear and tear. If medications, changing your level of activity, and using walking supports don’t help, you may need partial or total knee replacement surgery.

Bursitis – Knee bursitis is one of the most common bursitis conditions.  It can be painful when moving the knee, when kneeling, or even when at rest and is a common complaint of gardeners, clergymen, and other individuals who spend a lot of time working on their knees. Physical therapists treat knee bursitis to help reduce pain, swelling, stiffness, and weakness in the knee or leg.

If you are dealing with these or other knee injuries consult with your physician or physical therapist about whether physical therapy treatment might be appropriate for you.
