Three common causes of lower back pain

While we see many different causes of lower back pain, three common causes include: acute trauma, chronic disease, congenital deformities, natural aging, and more can cause lower back pain. When experiencing lower back pain, it is important to speak with a physical therapist before beginning any treatment programs to ensure you are targeting the root cause of your discomfort.

Spinal stenosis

The narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back causes spinal stenosis. This can lead to extreme pain, radiating numbness or tingling in the lower extremities, and restricted movement. This leads to pressure on the nerves in the area, bone spurs, ligament thickening, and degeneration of lumbar disks if not treated properly.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is caused by lumbar vertebrae slipping forward over the top of the vertebra below them. This places extreme compressive force on the lower back and can lead to disk degeneration in the spine. Sciatica symptoms may result when the lumbar disks flatten due to this compressive force.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis occurs when a fracturing in the pars interarticularis, a small piece of bone adjacent to the facet joint, fractures. This fracture can happen at any age, but symptoms of damage to this bone often are not felt until later in life.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is another cause of lower back pain. This is caused by improper curvature in the spine, leading to a degeneration of lumbar joints and disks. Many people have low grades of scoliosis that do not lead to symptoms, but severe cases are likely to have pain and difficulty with specific movements. In some cases, physical therapy or braces may help reduce scoliosis curvature.
