Physical Therapy in Bergenwood, NJStarting physical therapy can feel overwhelming, but at Twin Boro Physical Therapy we make it simple. When you start with us, you will be given a comprehensive assessment by one of our highly experienced hand therapists, physical therapists, or occupational therapists. You will then be connected one-on-one with a professional best suited for your specific needs. This one-on-one pairing will allow for the incorporation of manual therapies (such as joint manipulation and ultrasound), in addition to real-time adjustments to your training plan.

When you are paired one-on-one with a therapist, you are able to dive deeper into your care journey and create a safe space in which you are comfortable asking questions, discussing ideas, making adjustments to the plan, and expressing any concerns. We want patients to take a front row seat in their journey, and one-on-one pairings allow patients to feel confident, informed, and committed at each stage of the process.

How Is Osteoarthritis of the Knee Treated?

Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most common type of arthritis, and treatments will depend on the origin of the condition, progression of the symptoms, and lifestyle of the patient.

Depending on your needs, your physical therapist will work with you to develop a sustainable plan. Typically, patients are recommended a combination of the following:

  • Weight loss. Excessive weight can have a huge impact on the knees, and weight loss is often one of the first-line treatments recommended to put less pressure on the joints and alleviate pressure.
  • Increasing physical activity. By strengthening the muscles around the knees, patients are able to increase stability and reduce pain. This is often accompanied by stretching exercises to improve the range of motion.
  • Physical therapy. This is another form of increasing movement with the added benefit of a tailored plan crafted with multiple types of treatment to best alleviate your symptoms and provide lasting results.
  • Taking pain relieves and anti-inflammatory medications. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce pain symptoms and inflammation of the joints. However, it is important to discuss the dose and duration of taking these medications with your doctor or physical therapist to ensure there are no side effects or reasons to avoid these medications.
  • Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections. These steroids and powerful anti-inflammatory agents and can help to lubricate the joints and reduce pain associated with rubbing of the bones.
  • Acupuncture, supplements, or other alternative therapies. Some patients have great success in relieving symptoms with these methods.
  • Using a walking brace. Some knee braces are able to take some of the weight off of the knee and improve symptoms of pain.
  • Knee surgery. This is often the last line of treatment if other treatments have failed.
