How to Avoid a Rotator Cuff Injury

The Rotator Cuff is made up of four tendons and muscles in the shoulder that surround and support the shoulder joint. This group keeps your upper arm in place in your shoulder socket and prevents it from coming dislocated when you throw balls or perform movements.

The shoulder can be delicate, especially as we age, and tears in the rotator cuff are common. The most frequent way that a rotator cuff becomes injured is from overuse, such as repetitive throwing from pitchers in baseball, or graduate weakness in the area as we age. We commonly see this injury in people of all ages, however, older men have this injury with a higher frequency than other age or sex groups.

While injuries are not 100% preventable, certain measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood. These include:

  • Strengthen muscles of the shoulder consistently to increase stability in this area
  • Avoid consistently sleeping with your arm stretched overhead and putting pressure on your shoulder in this way
  • Keep good physical health and avoid consistent smoking
  • Have proper warm-up and cool-down routines before and after exercise These exercises and stretches should include motions that have external rotation and warm up the joint. If you feel pain in the area, rest and reduce activity that aggravates this.
  • Frequently treat the area with hot and cold compresses, especially if you use the shoulder repetitively in your exercise routine. This will decrease inflammation and keep overuse injuries from building up as quickly.
  • Start with lower repetitions and work your way up. This allows the body and muscles to adapt and increases the fitness of the area. Longevity is important and progression should not be rushed.
  • Pay attention to posture. This will help prevent the shoulder muscles from pulling oddly on the joint.
  • Speak with a physical therapist about any pain and the best way to prevent injury. Preventative measures are always better than recovering from an injury!
