Tennis Elbow: Treatment Overview

Tennis elbow is a common condition that causes pain on the outside of the elbow. This is most apparent when extending the wrist and fingers while the arm is straightened, but it can progress to present itself while performing a number of activities. If you suspect you may have tennis elbow, a trained physical therapist can verify this diagnosis and help you determine the next best steps to alleviate your symptoms.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

After diagnosis, you will be given non-surgical treatment options. These include, but are not limited to:

Rest

Often, the first symptoms of tennis elbow can be alleviated through rest. If the symptoms have progressed, 2 to 3 weeks of rest may be needed to fully recover.

Ice and NSAIDS

The next most important treatment, after rest, is icing the area. This can help to reduce inflammation and subsequent pain. We recommend you ice the area for periods of 20 minutes (avoid direct contact between ice and skin) and take NSAID medication such as naproxen or ibuprofen.

Immobilize the Area

This should be guided by a physical therapist but immobilizing the area may help to reduce symptoms.

Cortisone Shot

When NSAIDs are not enough, cortisone shots performed by a trained provider can help to significantly reduce pain. This is a steroid injection directly to the site to reduce inflammation.

Physical Therapy

Targeted exercises in physical therapy can help to strengthen and stretch the forearms to reduce pain and improve movement abilities. Physical therapy often also includes other non-surgical treatments such as icing, ultrasound, and massage.

Environmental Changes

Sometimes, improving the ergonomics of your home or work environment can significantly reduce symptoms. This includes things like adjusting posture, where your computer mouse it, the height of your seat, or your sports equipment.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

If none of the non-surgical options effectively help to reduce your symptoms in 6 to 12 months, surgery is likely to be the next step. When you have tennis elbow surgery, the surgeon will remove diseased parts of the muscle and reattach healthy parts of the muscle onto the bone. This surgery can be done through open surgery or arthroscopic surgery. Surgery is successful in eliminating symptoms in 80 to 90% of patients.
