Tips to Increase Flexibility 

Maintaining flexibility is important to reduce the risk of injury and maintain optimal health within the body. However, as many of us know, it can be difficult to get back into consistent stretching after “taking a break.” It’s no fun to sit in halfway stretches that don’t quite feel right and feel like you’re not making any progress. Unfortunately, the only way to get better is to start from where you are and keep building with consistency. We have a few tips to help shake off the dust and maintain healthy levels of flexibility:

  1. Warm Up! Don’t stretch when your body is cold. A quick 5 minutes of jumping jacks or jogging around the block can do wonders. When the muscles are warm, you can better relax into stretches with less risk of pulling a muscle.
  1. Stretch every day. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, consistently putting your body in the stretching positions will help create memory within your muscles and the stretches will begin to feel more natural. Over time, you will feel yourself progressing into deeper stretches.
  1. Active stretching. Try to use your muscles in the stretches and do a few leg lifts or static holds in the positions when applicable. For example, if you are lying on your back and pulling your knee towards your chest, take a few seconds to try to hold your knee there without using your hands for support. This will help the muscles stay strong and engaged and reduce the risk of injury.
  1. Don’t give up! Flexibility is the most challenging when you first start. Over time, the stretches will feel more comfortable and you will reap the benefits in all of your other activities!
