Eating To Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation can come in many forms, ranging from chronic inflammation within your body to inflammation within sore muscles. While the nature of inflammation will influence the outcome, it is generally beneficial to reduce inflammation within your body.

For example, when you are sore, the muscles are inflamed and this often causes pain and restricted movement. While rest, drinking water, and hot and cold therapy can help to reduce this inflammation, the diet also plays a large part in helping the body heal and recover.

One way in which to reduce inflammation in the body is to eat foods that are rich in nutrients that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. One such nutrient that has these properties in quercetin, which is a flavonoid (or plant pigment) that essentially tells your body to “turn off” inflammatory genes in your body. Over time, eating foods rich in this anti-inflammatory agent can help to reduce pain, chronic and acute inflammation, and lead to greater comfort in daily movement.

Foods rich in quercetin we recommend are:

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Apples
  • Berries
  • Green tea
  • Red wine

In addition to these foods, a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and plant-based or lean proteins can significantly help to reduce inflammation, prevent disease risk, improve recovery from injuries, and improve mental health.

When building a plate of anti-inflammatory foods, try to keep your plate at least half fruits and vegetables, one quarter whole grains, and one quarter proteins. This may look like a filet of omega-3 rich salmon with a side of brown rice and a large portion of broccoli and dark leafy greens. Over time, you will notice eating this way in addition to your physical therapy will greatly improve results and the longevity of these results.
