How is Ultrasound Used in Physical Therapy?

Ultrasounds are a commonly used tool in physical therapy treatments both for the deep heating effects and for non-thermal applications.

When used on soft tissues, ultrasounds provide deep heating of the tendons, muscles, and ligaments. This reduces inflammation and increases circulation, which can help decrease pain levels. For patients with stiffness or tension in their soft tissues, this technique increases the elasticity of the tissue and allows for the physical therapist to manually stretch and manipulate the joint or area. This can also be used to help improve a patient’s range of motion.

Another application of ultrasound is to introduce energy into the body in the form of microscopic gas bubbles which expand and contract around the soft tissues of the body. This is called cavitation, and it is said to help quicken cellular processes and speed the healing of damaged tissue.

How does Ultrasound Work?

Ultrasounds are small crystals. When electrical charges are applied to this crystal, piezoelectric waves are created which are emitted as ultrasound waves from the ultrasound device. These waves enter your injured soft tissues and increase circulation and cavitation, which has many benefits as described above.

The ultrasound machine has an ultrasound transducer (sound head) which will come in contact with the body. The physical therapist or technician will apply a small amount of gel on the body part of interest and move the sound head in small circular motions. Different settings control the intensity of the internal heating and the depth of the penetration of the waves. Your physical therapist will choose these settings based on the type of injury and stage of recovery.
