Swimming Injury FAQ
What are the most common swimming injuries?
The most common swimming injuries are of the neck and shoulder. These include irritation and inflammation of the shoulders, rotator cuff tears, tears in the cartilage around the shoulder socket, general pain, bicep tendonitis, and shoulder impingement syndrome.
Knee injuries are also common, especially for breaststrokers. This pain typically is felt around the kneecap or on the inside of the knee. If you have pain for more than 48 hours, it’s important to seek the advice of a medical professional.
What are the most common causes of swimming injuries?
The most common causes for swimming injuries include overtraining and not taking enough rest in between sessions, as well as poor technique and not being conditioned for the sport. Poor breathing or stroke techniques can lead to injury, and lacking the flexibility or strength for the high levels of movement repetition leads to overuse injury, especially in the hips or shoulders.
How are swimming injuries treated?
Swimming injuries are generally treated by rest, ice and heat, ultrasound therapy, and strengthening exercises. Physical therapy is recommended to help build the muscles and range of motion to accommodate the needs of the sport.
How are swimming injuries prevented?
Swimming injuries are best prevented by building the rotator cuff and scapular muscles to improve shoulder stability, strengthening the quadriceps muscles, improving knee stability, and strengthening the core.
Swimming-specific strengthening exercises, such as using resistance in the water, can help build the appropriate muscles. It is also important to gradually build-up training.
What stroke is the most prone to injury?
Breaststrokers are the most prone to injury because of the repetitive breathing movements and the lateral nature of the kick. If the quadriceps or muscles around the knee aren’t strong, then the kneecap is more likely to shift out of place or track incorrectly.
If the neck isn’t strong, then the continual in and out of the water to breathe during breaststroke can cause a sore neck or overuse injuries in the muscles.
