What is an Ankle Sprain?

Ankle sprains happen when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched beyond their normal range of motion. Ligaments connect bone to bone, and stretching them beyond their capacity leads to inflammation, pain, and tearing. One of the most common ways that ankle sprains occur is by “rolling your ankle.” This happens when a person rolls onto the outside of their foot unexpectedly, such as after stepping on uneven ground or stepping off of a curb.

Ankle sprains can lead to lasting pain if not treated properly. To take care of an ankle sprain, wrapping the ankle is often recommended to stabilize the joint and promote healing.

Why Should You Wrap a Sprained Ankle?

Wrapping a sprained ankle helps to prevent further damage to the ligaments during the healing process. When the ligaments are damaged, the ankle is less stable and you are more prone to rolling the ankle a second time. Wrapping the ankle is also beneficial if your ankle will be “hanging” down to the ground, as gravity can lead to increased inflammation in this position.

How Do You Wrap a Sprained Ankle?

While a trained professional is best suited to wrap a sprained ankle, following these simple steps can help you wrap your ankle at home. To start, you will want to obtain a rolled, elastic bandage. Follow these steps:

  1. Place the loose end of the bandage on the ball of your foot and hold it in place
  2. Wrap the bandage around your foot, covering the loose end. Continue to wrap the bandage around your foot, moving towards the ankle with each width of the bandage overlapping the previous one about halfway.
  3. At the ankle, wrap the bandage over the top of your foot and around the ankle
  4. Bring the wrap across the top of the foot towards the toes and loop it around the ball of the foot and back to the ankle, making a figure 8. Continue making a figure 8 until the heel is covered.
  5. Wrap the rest of the bandage around the lower leg and clip the bandage into position to hold it tight.

Another option is to buy a compression ankle sleeve or other garment designed to help reduce swelling and decrease the likelihood of a future sprain during healing. If you would like to discuss the best options for you, contact a medical provider or physical therapist for advice.
