 What is neck pain?

Neck pain is pain in the neck or pain that stems from the neck. For example, neck pain may lead to radiating pain down the arms or in the shoulders. Neck pain can be due to disorders of the soft tissues, nerves, muscles, ligaments, bones, or joints in the neck.

Anatomy of the neck

The neck is made of seven cervical vertebrae in the upper spine, known as the C1-C7 vertebrae. These vertebrae are cushioned by intervertebral discs, which absorb shock and protect the spinal bones. Intervertebral discs also allow for movement and rotation of the neck.

In the neck, each vertebra has a hollow space that runs longitudinally, making up the spinal canal. This canal allows nerves and the spinal cord to run throughout the length of the spine. In the spinal canal, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and a protective layer called the dura protect the spinal cord in the neck.

A pair of spinal nerves leave through each vertebra, allowing sensation in surrounding muscles, skin, and tissue. Ligaments and muscles protect the vertebra and other neck structures from damage and allow mobility in the neck region.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can originate from several causes. Arthritis and disc degeneration can cause pain through damage to the vertebrae and intervertebral discs, while certain conditions can lead to narrowing of the spinal canal. Neck pain can also be caused by inflammation, strain, and acute trauma to the area. In some cases, neck pain may originate from a neural condition.

In addition to disease and injury, neck pain can be caused by poor posture and natural aging. When we age, our bones and joints can naturally degenerate, leading to herniated discs and bone spurs. This can put pressure on nerves in the neck that lead to discomfort over time.

Because of the diverse causes of neck pain, it is imperative to consult with a physical therapist before beginning any treatment programs. A physical therapist will ensure you are only performing movements that are beneficial to you and avoid any accidental complications.
