Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises
Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises are designed to relax the neck and shoulder muscles while training the eyes to move independently. The goal of these exercises is to help people improve their balance while reducing dizziness. By practicing these exercises, many people are able to improve their coordination, reduce symptoms of vertigo, and increase general coordination.
Before beginning any exercise program, it is best practice to speak with a physical therapist beforehand to ensure you are not performing any movements that could be harmful to your condition. Physical therapists can also go through the movements with you to correct any form issues and make recommendations for modifications if needed.
To perform these exercises at home, make sure your environment is free from hazards and you are near a stabilizing surface such as a railing or wall. If you are prone to dizziness, being near a seat or soft surface, such as a bed, can reduce risk of any harm.
When beginning new exercises, start slowly with only a few repetitions to see how the body responds. You can then gradually increase intensity as you become more comfortable with the movements. At home Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises include movements such as:
- Sitting in bed and moving eyes up and down
- Sitting in bed and moving eyes side to side
- Sitting in bed and focusing on your finger while moving it from 3 feet to 1 foot away from your face
- Moving the head forwards and backwards in a nodding motion
- Turning the head from side to side
- Shrugging the shoulders while sitting
- Circling the shoulders while sitting
- Bending to the ground and standing back up
- Bending side to side
- Sitting to standing movement
- Throwing a ball from one hand to the other above eye level
- Sitting and standing with a full turn in between
- Walking up and down a hill
- Walking up and down stairs
- Playing catch with someone
- Bowling or other sports involving hand-eye coordination or aim
