Treatments for neck pain

Non-invasive methods

There are two main categories of treatments for neck pain: Surgical and non-surgical. In general, non-surgical treatments are preferred because of their lower risk for complications and ability to alleviate many symptoms. In most cases, neck pain is not life threatening and can be effectively treated with rest, pain medication, targeted physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory treatment methods.

Depending on the cause of neck pain, your doctor may recommend neck treatment options such as epidural steroids, wearing a cervical collar, or trigger point injections. Generally, noninvasive treatment methods are given over a 6 to 8 week period in which the patient’s progress will be closely monitored. During this period, the treatment methods may be expanded or altered depending on how the patient is progressing. If nonsurgical methods do not appear to be effective after this period, surgery may be considered.

Surgical methods

If noninvasive treatments are not providing relief from symptoms, patients may be recommended to have surgery. Patients are generally considered for surgery if they are experiencing significantly reduced function, difficulty balancing, difficulty walking, progressive symptoms, and are in good health outside of their neck pain.

When it comes to surgical methods, there are several options. Spinal fusions, artificial disc replacement, spinal decompression, and insertion of screws or plates may be performed depending on the patient’s symptoms. Spinal fusions create a union between two or more vertebrae in the spine and may be supported by screws for plates. This helps to stabilize the spine and alleviate chronic neck pain. In some cases, disc disease or pressure on the spinal root may influence surgical methods that are chosen, in addition to the patient’s age, severity of discomfort, length of symptoms, and additional medical conditions.
