All About Sports-Related Concussions

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is a type of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that results from a biomechanical force during an athletic event. This could be falling, being hit by a teammate or opponent, or running into a blunt object. This may or may not lead to a loss of consciousness and lack of awareness, but often leads to a headache and other mild symptoms.

Sports-related concussions can also result from an impact elsewhere in the body that leads a force to occur that affects the head and brain. Alcohol, drugs, and other conditions must not be involved for it to be labeled a sports-related concussion.

How common are SRCs?

SRCs occur up to 3.8 million times per year. This only includes reported cases, which indicated total cases are likely much higher.

There is some evidence that the total number of cases has risen significantly over the last decade, but this may be due to an increase in awareness and reporting. Recent data suggests that up to 50% of cases may go unreported, and the highest risk sports are ice hockey, rugby, football, and women’s soccer. Being a female, in general, is linked to an increase in sports concussions.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms typically occur within a few minutes of the concussion occurring. The most common symptoms are typically a headache or dizziness. Secondary symptoms such as a foggy mind, ringing in the ears, feeling confused, nausea or motion sickness, amnesia, and seeing lights are also common.

In the hours or days following a concussion, athletes also experience difficulties with concentration, inconsistent sleep, mood changes, and sensitivity to light and noise.

If a concussion is particularly severe, long-term behavioral and cognitive changes may occur. Most cases resolve within one to two weeks after the incident occurred.

If you experienced a concussion and have lasting dizziness, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or noticeable mood changes, make sure to speak with a trained sports physician to ensure there are no complications.
