How to warm up the neck and shoulder muscles

Daily stretching and exercises are great ways to reduce pain, but it is important to warm up properly. Warming up the muscles and joints involved in activities is always a good idea, and the neck muscles are no exception. Before performing any more intense stretches or movements, performing a few shoulder and head rolls can activate the muscles and increase blood flow to the area. Without warming up, you risk straining the neck and shoulder muscles. When this happens, you may experience increased discomfort and stiffness.

To get started, sit or stand upright with your arms relaxed by your side. Try to look straight ahead. From this position, slowly lift your shoulders and roll them in large circles, starting in one direction and then switching to the other. Try not to force any movements and relax into the stretch. 

Once the shoulders are warmed up, we can move on to the neck. Start in the same position, with the head upright and the shoulders relaxed. From here, gently stretch the neck from side to side. Once the neck is stretched, start by dipping your chin towards your chest. Gently begin to roll the neck in large circles, one direction and then the other. Try to maintain gentle breathing throughout the neck roles and do not force the exercise.
